upholding of truth, and the fifth is genuine love.58 In all this we see that the emphasis on love in Edwards’s theology of the Christian life does not find faithful descendants in the theologies of Schleiermacher and his heirs, who extract the subjective (experienced love) to the neglect of the objective (revealed truth). Love without truth is rootless. Truth without love is lifeless. Neither is true Christianity. True divine love is never divorced from, but always founded on, God-revealed truth.
